2023 breaks the trend of aid expansion. Is the 0.7% target at risk? This is the title of the event, organised by Médicos del Mundo and medicusmundi, which took place on 12 December, International Universal Health Coverage Day, at the Ateneo in Madrid
With six years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, only 17% of targets included in the 17 SDGs are on track to be achieved or have already been achieved; the rest show minimal progress, have stagnated or regressed. For SDG 3 on health, only 10% of targets have been met or are on track to be met. On the other hand, 117.3 million people were forcibly displaced in 2023, 8% more than in 2022, and acute food insecurity affected 281.6 million people in 59 countries and territories.
To cover all existing needs in the world, health and non-health, humanitarian and non-humanitarian, the DAC countries allocated 223,610 million dollars to cooperation, 0.37% of GDP. Spanish cooperation contributed 3,595 million euros to DAC countries' ODA, 0.24% of gross national income (GNI). Decentralised cooperation contributed 415.7 million euros to Spanish ODA, 0.12% of the budget of all the Autonomous Communities.
The event was moderated by Patricia Rodríguez of El País and featured:
- Antón Leis, director of the Spanish Agency for Development Cooperation
- Pilar García Doñoro, vice-president of Médicos del Mundo
- Paul Ortega, director of eLankidetza - Basque Agency for Cooperation and Solidarity
- Carlos Mediano Ortiga, member of the Board of medicusmundi International
The Report is a joint initiative of Médicos del Mundo and medicusmundi which provides a critical analysis of international, national and decentralised ODA on health and humanitarian action.
