The goal of UHC is to ensure all people receive the health services they need, without suffering financial hardship to pay for them. For a community or country to obtain this coverage, they must fulfil the following requirements:
UHC Day is held on 12 December, coinciding with the anniversary of the first unanimous UN resolution requesting States to provide affordable and quality medical care for all people in all places.
UHC is part of Sustainable Development Goal 3 from the UN’s 2030 Agenda and makes up Target 3.8:
Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all.
